How to Add Value to Your Paintings | Video on Creating Realistic Artwork for Beginners

Howdy, fellow artist!

Today, I want to share a little bit of a secret with you. And it’s called… well, how to add “value” to your paintings. And, just so we’re clear—I’m talking about value as an element of art, not as in how to make your paintings more “valuable”.

Now, of course, if you’re new around these here parts, first, welcome! Secondly, you should know that we’ve already got a lot of helpful tips on adding values to your paintings in another article here. But, for today’s post, we’re going to talk about “values” even more in depth with a full video. Yay!

There’s a lot to understand when it comes to making values in paintings, but you should know that it’s basically just all about making highlights and lowlights in your art. And highlights and lowlights are just like what they sound like—areas in your painting where things look kinda lighter or kinda darker. That’s all!

But, of course, going about making those highlights and lowlights can be tricky. Which is why, fellow painter, I invite you to watch the video included below, which will take you through some visual examples of “value” in different paintings. Feel free to take notes so that you start to understand the whole concept of “value”!

How You Can Add Value to Your Artwork

Now, yep, the person you see in the video is me (hi, again!). And I am a professional artist known as Kari Lynn M. Plus, I’m also a painting instructor online, and I have some amazing FREE classes you can take with me to actually practice incorporating value (and other elements of art) into your own paintings!

One class I recommend you take with me right now to get more comfortable with value in terms of art is the Free Blending & Values Workshop, which is a full painting workshop in which we go through some simple ways to make different values in your art using blending techniques. And, no, it’s not nearly as complicated as you may think, trust me.

Plus, this workshop comes with a printable workbook that we use to practice with!

So, join the workshop, and come paint with me, artist!
