Yes, you read that correctly; today, we’re learning how to draw and paint a butterfly using a SPOON! And… also a few other materials, such as:

  • A ruler
  • Pencils and paint brushes
  • Mixing sticks (such as paint spatulas, popsicle sticks, etc.)
  • Paints (acrylic preferred, tempera also works well)
  • Construction paper, painting paper, or a canvas surface
  • A water cup and towel or napkin

Mainly, we will be using the spoon to sketch out our butterflies, and any “standard” size of spoon will work (just not a soup spoon, although you may certainly experiment with it!). I use a plastic spoon in this video, which worked out really well since it was slightly flexible and I didn’t have to worry about getting paint on it. You can paint your butterfly any color you’d like (as I explain as we get to the painting section), but I will be showing you how to create a rainbow butterfly with a bit of an ombre effect!
