Back to Portraits for Beginners Course

by Kari Lynn M.

Welcome to the first full class of the “How to Paint Portraits” for Beginners series!

Our first class will introduce you to the concept of painting eyes, and we’re doing to dive deep into what really makes an eye look realistic. We also break down the painting of an eye into a few manageable steps that you can take on as slowly as you need. Remember—there is no rush with any class in this entire course, and you can rewind the class video, watch it again and again, or even slow down the video if you’d like.

Painting eyes can be broken down into a couple of key steps: painting the “whites” of the eyes, painting in the “corner” of the eyes, painting the irises and pupils, painting the skin around the eyes, and painting the eyelashes plus outlining the eyes themselves. We will practice this whole process once in this class, and then we will practice it again with another set of eyes in the next class, so don’t worry about making things look “perfect” the first time!
