For a super late throwback Thursday!
And it’s a classic. To me, at least.
Somebody’s Miracle by Liz Phair!
Woo-hoo!
Anyway… here goes, straight to the lyrics.
I’m so far, so far away from it now
That it seems like I may never know how
People stay in love for half of their lives
So far away from being in love with somebody… oh, the feeling.
It’s a secret they keep between husbands and wives
Baby, There goes somebody’s miracle
Walking down the street
And there goes somebody that ain’t single.
There goes some other fairy tale
I wish it could happen to me
But I look at myself
Wonderin’ if I’m just too weak
To have such faith in myself
She’d like to fall in love for herself… but isn’t sure if she can really do it or if she’s worthy enough to do it.
Once upon a time I was so restless in love
When things we’re fine, I changed my mind just because
Before, she used to change her mind and switch between relationships just because she could.
Now I see how wrong and reckless I’ve been
Each frog has a prince just waiting inside of him
She sees now that she should have taken her relationships more seriously, because she’s not having much luck anymore. Oh… and, basically, don’t judge a guy based on his looks.
Baby, There goes somebody’s miracle
Walking down the street
There goes some other fairy tale
I wish it could happen to me
But I look at myself, and I think what the hell
Maybe I’m just too naive
To have such faith in myself
You know I’m prayin’ for it
The chorus, again, with a little bit of change… but still the same idea as before. And, by prayin’ for it, I think she’s talking about praying for some better luck or more faith in herself.
But the queen, she likes to sit on her throne
Doesn’t mean you two are never alone
This part made me think a lot… my interpretation, though, is that the queen is, like, the queen/goddess of love… or something, and she likes to control people’s relationships, but that doesn’t mean that people can’t still have free will and a say in those relationships. Maybe that’s kind of far out, though… who knows.
It’s just love has needs that love only knows
Watch a couple stay close, It’s like the bloom of a rose
Some aspects of love nobody understands expect for ‘love itself’… and watching a couple stick together to old age is a beautiful thing. (It really is.)
Baby, There goes somebody’s miracle
Walking down the street
There goes some other fairy tale
I wish it could happen to me
There goes somebody’s miracle
Walking down the street
There goes some other fairy tale…I never cry out loud, I
I keep my tears to myself
She doesn’t express how she feels to other people.
But I woke up one day and I found my life had left me for someone else
I, I guess it must be unhappy with me
She just woke up one day and realized… well, I feel like this could go a few different ways. Either she was in a good relationship and her significant other left her for someone else and she was kind of in denial about it for a while before it hit her… or her life of having a lot of different relationships (that she mentions in the beginning) has changed and she’s realizing now that it’s different. Or, maybe the line actually has nothing to do with love and relationships, and she’s just realizing that her whole life is changing. Any way you take it, though… it all changed because it wasn’t happy with her.
Baby, There goes somebody’s miracle
Walking down the street
There goes some other fairy tale
I wish it could happen to me
But I look at myself
Wondering if i’m just too weak
To have such faith in myself
You know I’m prayin for it
You know I’m prayin for it
You know I’m prayin for it
And… end!
So… the general story?
I feel like there’s a few different directions you can take the lyrics into… but the top one I’d stick to is that this is Liz telling her story about wanting a strong, fairy tale-like relationship. I mean, she wishes it could happen to her!
I think there’s also some mini stories built into the song as well… like, her whole life is changing and she’s getting older… she’s not having the luck she used to have… and those sorts of things. Mainly, though, she just sees people walk by on the street every day… and just knows they’re in a better relationship than she is, and wants to have whatever they have.
So… I think that’s pretty much it for this song. Let me know what you think or what your take is… or if this song is a classic for you, too!
